About the institute
Nearly three decades of special education in Feroke.
AWH Institute for the Mentally Handicapped was established in 1996 under the Association for Welfare of Handicapped. We exist to develop people and services in the field of intellectual disability — on campus, and in the communities around Kozhikode.
A recognised training institute, not a brochure.
Our work is practical: prepare teachers, counsel families, and take rehabilitation beyond the people who can already reach us.
For more than twenty-five years the institute has been a place where special educators are trained and where children and parents can find a steady, local centre of support.
Objectives
What we set out to do.
- 01
Prepare teachers and professionals
Build the people who deliver services to persons with intellectual disability — through structured training, not slogans.
- 02
Share knowledge with the field
Act as an information and extension centre for teachers, special educators, and rehabilitation professionals.
- 03
Work in the community
Promote community-based rehabilitation, especially for rural and low-income families around Kozhikode.
- 04
Take programmes beyond campus
Run outreach in intellectual disability so support is not limited to those who can walk through our gate.
- 05
Counsel children and parents
Offer counselling for children with special needs and the families who walk with them.
